Music helps us study and think There is a strong correlation between music and the way we study. In fact, research has shown that when music shows some mathematical structure, it tends to be more popular. These include geometry, signal processing, differential calculus, and even trigonometry. Lack of funding for instruments can hinder the effectiveness of the material. You can use different mathematical phenomena in music. I think the book is an excellent resource for public school students, where there is an entire population of musical, auditory learners. Unfortunately, those of us who teach in an inner city public school may not have resources to purchase instruments that would have made the instruction more meaningful. Math and Music: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Transformations of Functions. That said, this book integrates mathematics and music through an exploration of musical instruments and music history. In addition, the activities did not appeal to all students. We did not have access to the instruments, which made instruction less effective. It also has several weaknesses namely, that many of the activities require a hands-on use of instruments. The students will understand how mathematical addition is applied to music. The book has several strengths: It can be used as a mathematics intervention and with auditory, rhythmic, and musical learners. Objective: Students will learn how maths and music are related. This book contains integrated math activities for elementary and middle school students and is designed to help make mathematical connections. Reviewed by NCTM: Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, Vol. Library of Congress Control Number: 2011924459 Finally, the Activity & Questions section allows students to engage in each activity as well as discuss questions allowing students to share their ideas in groups. In the Mathematical Standard and Mathematical Concepts section, we detail the mathematics content covered in the activity matching the corresponding NCTM standards.

In the Recommend Music and Musicians section, we provide musical pieces from great masters and contemporary musicians for each instrument. In each activity, we provide a Background section detailing concise historical or cultural information about the origin, development or the characteristics of the musical instruments as well as music composition theory. This book provides a comprehensive connection between mathematics and world-wide cultures through 43 musical instrument designing activities and 12 music composition activities.
